Gain Space with Bay Windows

It was the perfect spot. Our California ranch-style house was a large picture window in the parlor. The window extended from a few inches above the ground, to name just a few inches below the ceiling. The walls and ceiling were redwood stained knotty pine and the floor was a suitable hardwood. The window looked out over a bed of flowers, shrubs and the expanse of lawn in front of the house. It was the perfect window to be replaced with a bay window.

The window was almostSquare. It was 72 X 72 cm. We considered a bay, but chose to install a bay window instead. We just felt that our special house better with three-panel bay window and did not see the number of panel bay window. Our intention was to SEAT Board of the bay with potted plants we were sitting in front of the current image-filled window. The new scheme would improve us a little more space in the room and the general appearance of the house. It was time togo shopping.

Scratch vs. Pre-built Bay Windows

When we discussed the idea of the installation was the new window, I started collecting plans to build a bay window. Browse books and magazines and the Internet search engines, I found several plans for the construction bay, sash and garden windows from scratch. I also found that companies would be such a project redundant. Most of the major window manufacturers, as do, for example, Pella, Milgard and Andersonboth fully assembled bay windows and prefabricated components for the replacement window.

These days very few contractors, the project assumes the construction of a bay or bay window from scratch. It's just not practical when for the same or less money they can install a high quality prefabricated window. If the contractor use of prefabricated components for Windows, or new home construction or renovation projects, then we might as well for our remodeling project, wefounded.

Installing a bay window can be quite a do-it-yourself project. Before you go the DIY route, but you can help a contractor on the line, if needed. This is not a job that you can not be completed during a Saturday afternoon. The chances are you will not finish it in one weekend, for that matter.

You will also want to line up some help. Bay window and window components are heavy. At least they are too heavy for one person. Manage

Be sure and check out the weather forecast, including the long-range forecast. Installation of the window means opening a hole in your home. It may take several days until the new window to get in place and sealed. The last thing you want is for rain to pour in on your floor, walls or furniture.

Be sure and check your city or town building codes. It may reflect local characteristics, such as safety glass in low-profile window. You are likely toNeed for a building permit anyway, so that even a good time to check the codes.

Tools and materials needed

The tools you need for this project include a tape measure, framing square, which you saw as a ruler, or a circular saw can miter, crowbars, drills and bits, level, stapler, utility knife, tin snips and a caulking gun.

The materials that you need to include the bay window unit, the support brackets, nails, roofing felt, shingles, roofing nails,exterior grade silicone caulking and fiberglass insulation. You will also need 1X6 inch boards for the window skirting. If you are enlarging an existing window, or if you are installing the window in a space that was previously the wall, you will also need 2X4s for cripple studs and additional framing.

Basic Installation Steps

1. Establish window position in the wall. Remove the existing window. Measuring the bay window, mark on the exterior of the house the opening Requirements for the new window. Use your circular saw, cut the required opening.

2. Framing. Build for the preparation of the new window. This is probably the reduction as part of the existing bolts are and put it into a new header, rough sill, jack studs and cripple studs.

5. Build the box roof. Place the roof frame on the bay window unit and nail in place. Fill the space between the roof and the tip of the bay window with insulation. Attach the roof sheeting to the frame and cover with roofing felt. Install the drip edges and the flashing and then shingles.

6. Install the windows along the entire bottom of the window. Fill insulation and then attach the Rockdown to seal the underneath side of the window.

7. Seal the edges with silicone seals.

This is a list of the basic installation before, and they have been shortened in the interest of simplicity and space. The window unit you buy will be complete installation steps. Take it from the voice of experience, it really makes the project go much better and it is in a much shorter time, if you read and follow them to be completed.

In our case, I had two friends help withthe project. We have worked on other projects and work well together. We had completed the old window and the rough down on Saturday afternoon. We buttoned up the hole with plywood night and went back to work the next day. On Sunday evening, we had installed the new window and closed the roof and base. On Monday afternoon, until I finished sealing the outside and finished the trim work inside.

And we were right. It was the perfect spot for a bay window. Itlooked great from the outside. Inside, it became the center of the room and has a special charm of the house. The window has the home has character and value.

When it came to sell the house, it was one of the features that were most attractive to buyers.
